Charlie, You're No Joe Lieberman

Governor Charlie Crist's intent to emulate Joe Lieberman and run as an independent is based on a grossly faulty hypothesis. Lieberman's ideology always remained substantially in sync with his electorate base. The only discord was over his support of the war on Iraq.  A position for which Connecticut Democratic party leaders decided to punish him by denying him his Democratic Party nomination. But they miscalculated. They failed to take into consideration the state’s voters' appreciation for Lieberman’s well-recognized and long standing performance. Thus, when voters were given a choice of keeping a man with a proven ideology record in office, or voting for a man whose only claim to the senate seat was to punish Lieberman for his war stance, the selection was foreordained. Lieberman’s running as an independent was merely a necessary tactical maneuver to do an end-run around vengeful party leadership.

Crist’s situation is the exact opposite. Crist has displayed a remarkable affinity to act grossly counter to the ideology of his base. Arguably worse, he has amply evidenced being devoid of any worthy ideology foundation, much less that of a Republican. In fact, his more recent actions demonstrate a crass streak of opportunism that does not well-serve Florida, and not even Crist himself.

His deportment left Florida Republican leaders with no alternative but to seek another candidate to support as the Republican senatorial candidate. And, they chose well. Marco Rubio’s small government, less tax ideology is well known. Voters well know his support of abolition of the real estate tax. Something that voters will be reminded of as they receive their tax bill around election time. And, there is no doubt that a Senator Rubio will embrace undoing Obamacare, as opposed to embracing Obama himself.

Speculatively, Crist may well find that, contrary to public comments, a sufficient number of truly competent teachers and school administrators, those whose expertise affords them the security of having nothing to fear from being unshackled from the adverse chains of tenure, will take umbrage at Crist's denying them the bonuses their competence merits. They surely will not vote for Crist.

Charlie, your situation is the converse of Lieberman's, and so will be the outcome. An outcome that will leave you with no latitude for political recovery.
